The philosophy of fashion

"Fashion is a product. Advertising is selling a product. A designer creates the product," says former advertising genius James Reyes, the newly-elected president of the Young Designers Guild (YDG). This award-winning former art director of top advertising agency Campaigns and Grey is ready for his long-time passion for clothes and design. After being a finalist in MEGA magazines Young Designers Competition in 2002 and representing our country for the Paris Young Designers competition also in the same year, James has found his true calling in the world of fashion.
Known for his geometric designs, James eclectic modern style is deeply rooted in fine arts and years of experience in advertising. "I like shapes, architecture and graphic design. I like designing clothes with clean lines and witty twists." His cutting-edge works remind us of internationally renowned revolutionary Japanese designers such as Yohji Yamamoto, Rei Kawakubo and Issey Miyaki whom he emulates with a passion. He says, "I love their vision of fashion and how they have elevated it to the level of fine art." Inspired by music, animation and pictures, monumental buildings and pop culture in general, the designers sensibilities are grounded with a sense of nationalism. "I believe that designers and artists should be sensitive about our being Filipino. Its what makes us different from the rest of the world. Its what makes us original." He adds, "Fashion design is not just garment manufacturing. Its a reflection of who, what and where we are."
With more than a decade worth of experience in advertising, James aims to apply what he has learned to fashion. He states "Part of advertising is working with clients, you have to hold their hands and earn their trust that you will make their brands sell. In fashion, you have to assure your clients that they will look good in your creations." As YDG president, James is bent on maintaining the high level of quality, standard and artistry among the group. "Fashion becomes a form of advertising if the result of your work translates to compliments, published works and most importantly, clients knocking on your door." He aims for the group to move a step further and be successful in the world of fashion commercialism. "I want each member of the group to become a brand; that the YDG be recognized as one of the great sources of young designers in Asia." With that in mind, James' brilliant yet practical concept of fashion is a fusion of advertising and art.
Dreaming in fashion, James has an optimistic approach in life and loves to be surrounded by things that make him happy. "I collect childrens books and music. I love to drift to beautiful worlds while listening to music." This daydreamer is a disciplined artist who puts life into his thoughts and actions with his words. He says, "Half of what an artist does is conceptualizing and the other half is creating. I always make sure what I conceptualize I can create. Otherwise, it would be a useless idea."
