The wonders of a good workout

BETWEEN YOU & ME - BETWEEN YOU & ME By Jacquilou Blanco -
There are still many incorrect beliefs and fears which prevent people from getting the benefits of a good workout.

Here are some of them:

•Will jumping during exercise make the breasts sag?

There is no proof that exercise will cause the breasts to sag. From what I have learned and read, factors like breast size, weight and age affect the sagging.

I suggest wearing a well-fitting sports bra during exercise and include chest exercises in your workout.

•Will sweating a lot during exercise make one lose more fat?
No. Profuse sweating does not lead to greater fat loss. What you lose from sweating is almost entirely water.

A lot still seem to believe that if you don’t sweat a lot during workout, your workout isn’t effective. That is not true. Some people sweat more than others do.

I do not sweat heavily but that doesn’t mean I don’t work out well.

•Will muscle turn to fat if one stops training?

Muscles do not turn to fat. They are different types of tissue. Lack of exercise can cause muscles to shrink and may result in a flabby appearance, but stopping exercise will not turn muscles to fat.

When a person stops working out, the muscles gradually return to pre-exercise levels.

•Will one get bulky and look like a man if one exercises or trains with weights?

Bulky muscles associated with body builders are often the result of the male hormone testosterone. While both men and women have this hormone, women do not have enough to make muscles as big as those of men.

If you want to train with weights and have a toned body but do not want size, use an exercise plan with high repetitions. Consult fitness professionals and of course, eat in moderation.

•‘I won’t be able to sleep soundly if I start on a fitness plan.’

Factors like the time of day one exercises, the intensity and length of a workout and the level of one’s fitness may affect the quality of sleep.

A morning workout isn’t likely to affect sleeping patterns despite the high intensity of training. Mild to moderate exercise in the late afternoon may improve sleep.

But training done too long or hard near bedtime may disrupt sleep.

I also suggest lessening your intake of caffeine towards late afternoon or evening, so it is easier to sleep.

•‘I don’t need to exercise. Diet alone can make me lose weight.’

Exercise and a balanced diet go together. You can’t separate one from the other.

For me, the key to losing weight is having your mind set towards that goal, sticking to a sensible fitness program and eating a balanced diet.

If you want a body that is more firm, more toned, exercise needs to be consistent along with eating sensibly and in moderation. Exercise has so many benefits. It’s a pity if we don’t exercise because of the wrong information or beliefs about them.
