Foundation day

FASHION PERSONA - FASHION PERSONA By Jenni Epperson -
Instant flawless skin in a bottle (or compact) anyone?

This week, I was again fortunate to work with one of Manila’s most in-demand (and for me, one of the nicest and sexiest) makeup artists, Juan Sarte for a photo shoot with multi-awarded singer, Jaya. I asked Juan tips on how to choose a good foundation.

According to Juan, "Half the battle is won when you use good, even-looking foundation to achieve great makeup. Though a good foundation may create a flawless-looking face, nothing beats good, clean skin; proper skin care is more important."

Here are his tips for a flawless finish:

• Powder.
For everyday wear, powder foundation is a good choice. It’s a quick fix whether you’re in the office or outdoors. They’re also great for touch-ups when you have applied liquid foundation before going out. Powder foundation gives you from minimal coverage to full coverage. It gives mostly a matte and velvety finish unless the powder has glitters that leave a shimmery effect on the skin.

• Liquid.
This is best used to achieve sheer coverage because the pigments thin out with water, giving a barely made-up look. Also good for everyday use.

• Cream.
Juan prefers using this foundation when applying makeup on someone for a photo shoot. But it can be a bit heavy for daytime use. Cream foundation has the highest density of pigments. It is more bonded and thus gives the face a milky finish. It makes the face appear flawless. When blended well, this needs very little or no digital retouching on photos. It works well for people with firm skin, but Juan avoids using it on skin with deep lines as it emphasizes the creases.

• Cake.
This water-activated foundation works well when applying makeup on someone for the movies and for faces with wrinkles and deep lines as it gives an opaque look to the skin. Its full coverage makes lines less apparent, but proper blending is a must!

• Tinted moisturizer.
This moisturizer-based foundation is good for women with normal to dry skin. The finish is very sheer and slightly dewy. It is best for those who have normal to dry skin.

• Loose powder.
Juan uses this to set the foundation when he uses cream or liquid. Use a powder puff to set it because you need to press it to the skin, then dust off excess powder with a soft brush.

The use of foundation is to fake real skin into looking flawless so the choice of color should match your skin tone. When trying on a foundation, blend it from your neckline just above the jaw line to see if it blends well with your skin. Women have different skin tones on their faces, especially around the hairline where most skin tones are darker, so Juan uses a darker shade. He uses different shades of foundation for the face and concealer to achieve an even-looking skin tone. It takes practice and good blending to achieve this.
