Rediscovering Boracay
The calm azure seas greeted us with serene tranquility. The whispering waves rustled and echoed gratitude to the heavens. The celestial dance of stars and sky perfectly aligned above, casting a magical glow upon our journey. The sun washed the way ahead with brilliance, and an entire spectrum of tropical fish colored our way in shades of blue, yellow, red, orange, gold, and silver, leading us towards the apex of luxury: Shangri-La, located in one of the most acclaimed corners of Boracay’s island paradise.

My childhood friend Edwin Santos (now a physical therapist in Texas), who has become a world traveler, said it was hard to outdo the spell cast by this resort. We ended up singing songs from the film Lost Horizon that depicts an amazing place referred to as Shangri-la. But our journey here wasn’t merely about indulgence; it was about rediscovery. The loss of a beloved family member, Tita Tilde Belo, a year ago unexpectedly became the catalyst for our reunion after two decades apart. As we gathered with the Dayrit, Belo, Espino families, we realized the fleeting nature of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones, whether near or far.
From the indulgent comforts of Bulgari to the captivating allure of Verbena-scented amenities, every detail is meticulously curated to ensure a stay of unrivaled opulence. Dinner at the grand Presidential suite with cuisine like flavorful Phad Thai, adobo, kalabasa, burger with Camembert, chicken curry and the sweetest mangoes for dessert. Several butlers served us with a gracious smile and we learned that they travel to Shangri-La hotels around the world.
One of the major highlights here is the gargantuan and sumptuous breakfast buffet with a wide selection of eggs, fluffy pancakes, and Filipino favorites like tapa, tocino, and danggit, arroz caldo, fresh fruits, and salads. There were Mexican, Spanish, American delights and you can also enjoy appetizers and fruit cocktails.
All day long, in the solace of your villa, you can dine al fresco with barbecue meats and seafood grilled to perfection.
Worthy to note, we met the new general manager, Hans Martin Gfrel. He ensured the hotel’s legacy of welcoming guests and giving them an unforgettable experience in one of the world’s best island resorts. Previously, he’s managed Shangri-La Jakarta, Indonesia, after holding the executive assistant manager of food and beverage post at Shangri-La Singapore.

Another activity we engaged in was diving into the pools that refreshingly engulf the resort’s grounds overtaken by lush vegetation. Every activity within the resort caters to your desires and pleasure. Pickleball is available for the active, while the rest may want to chill by the infinity pool overlooking stunning views of the cerulean waters of the Philippine sea.
Asuccinct measure of resort service value is the efficiency and attitude of bell services. Masterful is how best to describe the thoughtful generosity and compassion of Shangrila Concierge. While promenading the cobbled walkways to the villas from pools, the beach and bistros is a fun and easy walk, yet irresistible is the prompt action of the buggy service.

In our secluded villa, amid the opulence of Shangri-La, we were joined by dynamic Fiscal Fraulainea Rapal. Her vibrant presence added more humor and laughter. Together, we forged new memories that would linger in our hearts and minds for years to come, a testament to the enduring power of love and connection in our life’s journey.
