Two books on Intramuros at Tesoros
During Tesoros’ second Disenyo at Talento Talk for 2024, Professor Victor Z. Torres spoke on two books: Intramuros, The Story of Old Manila and Paseo de Intramuros, A Guidebook to Manila’s Walled City. Together with Torres was Carlos Madrid Alavarez-Pinero, who wrote the preface for both books and who presided over the open forum.
The guests were a mix of loyal patrons of Tesoros, who brought friends who became new customers. Also present were students and members of the public, who were informed as they expressed an interest in Philippine history, especially that of Intramuros. They were treated to a Filipino-Spanish-themed buffet and cocktails, a gracious and generous feature of Tesoros Disenyo at Talento talks.
The talk covered the beginnings of Intramuros, corrections of commonly known details that were in fact in error, and an enhancement of everyone’s appreciation of the significant sites and important events that happened within the Walled City. The question-and-answer portion was particularly active, with clarifications on misconceptions and the sharing of personal family anecdotes that happened in Intramuros by members of the audience.
Author and lead speaker Jose Victor Z. Torres is a De La Salle University Professor of History as well as a multi-awarded writer, Palanca award-winning playwright and essayist. His good friend and fellow collaborator on several book projects, Carlos Madrid, was the director of Instituto de Cervantes de Manila and is currently a Professor of Spanish Pacific History at the University of Guam. Both gentlemen are acknowledged authorities on Philippine history during the Spanish era. We await more publications from these two talented champions of Filipino history.
Do buy these books and come to appreciate Intramuros more on your next visit. After all, who doesn’t come to Manila without visiting Intramuros?
The books are available at Tesoros, 1016 Arnaiz Ave., and its other branches for less than P600 each. If you wish to join the succeeding D&T talks and for other inquiries, contact Tesoros at info@tesoros.ph.
