Would you rather buy items in bulk or tingi-tingi?
This question might seem out of place when discussing concerts, but for Filipino fans of the South Korean boy group GOT7, it captures their recent experience perfectly. The concept of tingi-tingi — buying or experiencing something in smaller, more manageable portions — found a unique application in what Filipino Ahgases call the “GOT7 tingi era.” During this period, the members of GOT7 visited the Philippines not as a full group but individually, holding solo concerts and allowing fans to savor their music one or two members at a time.
Mark Tuan, the group’s Taiwanese-American rapper, recently made a solo appearance in Manila, marking the end of this so-called tingi era. On January 14, 2024, at the SM North EDSA Skydome, Mark staged a solo concert that not only showcased his talents but also underscored the unique bond between the artist and his fans. The concert kicked off with a set by Taiwanese-American singer and rapper Wesdaboy. He brought a ton of energy to the stage, warming up the crowd for what was to be a memorable evening.
The main event saw Mark performing a mix of hits from his discography, including tracks from his 2022 studio album “The Other Side.” Beyond his musical performances, Mark engaged with the audience, sharing insights into the journey and emotions that shaped his music. He reflected on the decade spent with GOT7, the contrast between his public persona and private emotions, and the thematic depth of his solo work. These moments of connection, interspersed with his songs like Far Away, Last Breath, and Let U Go, offered fans a deeper understanding of the artist behind the music.
“Being on camera and on stage all those years, you guys have probably seen [my] bigger moments and I’m always happy, but I’m sure there are times when we can’t hide our emotions. This album speaks about this part of us — this part of me,” he said.
A touching moment came when Mark acknowledged that he was the last of the GOT7 members to hold a solo concert in the Philippines. He expressed gratitude and admitted that he, too, was looking forward to a reunion. This sentiment was echoed in the fan-made video played during the encore, highlighting the unity of GOT7 despite their individual pursuits. Mark’s heartfelt message to the fans, emphasizing presence and mutual support, resonated deeply, reinforcing the sense that GOT7’s spirit transcends physical togetherness.
The concert closed with Mark performing One in a Million, My Name, This is Everything, and Imysm, leaving fans with a sense of fulfillment and anticipation for future reunions. Through the tingi-tingi approach to experiencing GOT7’s music, Filipino Ahgases have deepened their connection with each member while eagerly awaiting the day they can once again cheer for GOT7 as a whole. Mark Tuan’s solo concert not only concluded the tingi era but also promised that, regardless of the format, the bond between GOT7 and their fans remains unbreakable. — Julian Mauricio
