What started out as a meticulously crafted pair of orthopedic sandals in 1774 has transformed into a runway-worthy fashion staple. From Valentino to Manolo Blahnik to Proenza Schouler and Dior, Birkenstock allows the wearer to walk in comfort and style.
And so it’s only fitting to honor such a legacy now, as this iconic German footwear brand awaits its 250th anniversary in 2024.
Last October, Birkenstock took guests on an exciting journey through its history with the “Hourglass Exhibition” at The Gallery in Greenbelt 5.
Avid Birkenstock patrons, media partners, and guests from Manila-based German social groups marveled at the brand’s first-ever shoe models, as well as some of the archival tools used in crafting these fashion staple in the last two centuries.
There, I spotted my favorite pair — the Original Birkenstock-Footbed Sandal from 1979 called “Madrid.” Created by Karl Birkenstock and launched in 1963, Madrid was “against the fashion trend and flopped in the shoe market” at that time. Today, it’s one of Birkenstock’s best-selling pairs, and now comes in EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate). Made from a single piece of molded EVA, this pair of sandals is water-friendly and ultra-lightweight. With Madrid EVA, one can experience Birkenstock’s anatomically shaped footbed, whether you’re headed to the gym or the pool.
Also on display were pieces from Birkenstock collaboration with Maison Valentino, the Rock Star Baby collection, a range of Birkenstocks designed by Bon Jovi drummer Tico Torres, and other covetable pairs.
One of the highlights of the event was the leather personalization booth where guests had their exclusive leather keychain stamped with their initials.
Guests also learned about the importance of wearing shoes that offer the right fit, and discover their correct shoe size when wearing Birkenstock footwear at the Find Your Fit wall.
A legacy of comfort
For over two centuries, Birkenstock has remained committed to crafting authentic comfort for people around the globe. Deeply rooted in tradition since 1774, the brand has remained firm in its purpose of crafting footwear that allows people to walk as nature intended — and in style — and educating people on the importance of foot health in the process.
Now considered a cult classic, the brand has emerged as a fashion staple around the globe.
Stepping into the future
Beyond tracing Birkenstock’s enlightening journey through time, the “Hourglass Exhibition” also gave guests a preview of the newest, innovative footwear from Birkenstock that will be made available in a few months’ time. Watch out for the rustic yet modern Zurich model, which combines the stability of a closed-toe shoe with the lightness of a sandal. Its upper is constructed with a mix of soft synthetic felt and thick natural leather.
