Ladies and gentlemen, we are floating in space
Space… NASA… bed… jazz… maître d’… all these words sprang up like space-age foam one August afternoon at the PMCS Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati. Jason Nicholas — managing director for Tempur International — had just flown in the night before from Melbourne, but the furthest thing from his mind was getting some shuteye. He was recently in Manila for the launch of the Tempur Pro Mattress, which delivers 20 percent more pressure relief.
Nicholas touched on Tempur’s origin story that stretches far back to the late Sixties when NASA scientists and engineers were asked to develop a material to absorb the G-force pressure astronauts endure during lift-offs and landings. Even brainiacs realize that a sleep mattress, er, matters. Thus, the Tempur viscoelastic, “slow-spring-back foam” material was born.
Since then, the people behind the Tempur brand have continued to research, develop, manufacture and distribute mattresses, pillows and other products to improve the sleep experience worldwide. Even if Tempur is positioned as being the best in the market, improvement has always been a nagging thought. Clearly they refuse to rest on their laurels.
“It’s sort of like asking Michael Jordan, at the pinnacle of his career, to jump 20 percent higher, or for Adele to increase her octave range by 20 percent — it’s impossible,” said Nicholas with a laugh. “But with our engineers in Denmark, we are able to improve the performance of our Tempur products. The brand-new Tempur Pro line offers a high level of comfort and support, as well as additional pressure-relieving properties.”
The new mattress collection includes the Tempur Pro Plus SmartCool mattresses with a cool-to-the-touch cover, which regulates the sleeping climate. The mattress cover with its SmartCool cooling thread makes it 75 percent cooler compared with Tempur’s standard range, providing a refreshing and tranquil night’s rest.
This product is ideal for Filipino consumers, pointed out Nicholas. “We’re a bit like Apple in a sense that we have a global assortment of products; but there are different features and benefits which might be more suitable for countries like the Philippines with a warmer climate.”
The man has been working for the brand for 13 years. “When I was younger, I did not have an appreciation for how important sleep is. When you’re younger, you’re always up and about, your body performs better.” But Nicholas soon realized — along with many others who have become more conscious of their health and wellbeing — that sleep is essential.
