Manuel Abejero, Pangasinan:  Congratulations, Nonito! You were like a sharpshooter aiming at a fast-moving target and you got him! Awesome. Those boisterous and arrogant Mexicans should think hard and train hard whenever they face a Filipino boxer. Mabuhay ka, Nonito! You made us proud again!

A dangerous boxer

Desuel Pardo, Mandaluyong City: Behind his clean cut and boyish look, Nonito Donaire Jr. is a tough and dangerous scientific boxer. Montiel must have feared that if the bout goes the distance, he may lose on points as he could hardly find his mark, while Donaire was jabbing effectively. He took the bait of Donaire by opening his defense, thinking he could land a powerful right hook to Donaire’s jaw but he proved that his eagerness was a mistake, because that slight opportunity gave way to the left hook of Donaire that sent Montiel to his doom. Whoever it will be, Donaire’s next challenger must be patient and scientific, too, to last the distance and hope for a win by decision. That is, however, wishful thinking as Donaire is now on top of his career and will still go further to compensate the misfortunes the Philippines has been getting the past decade.

Cris Rivera, Rizal: “The Filipino Flash” shouldn’t be underestimated. A flash of a left hook floored the game Mexican champion for good. Hail Donaire, Filipino.

Germi Sison, Cabanatuan City: Aside from his power and speed, Nonito kept his focus on the movement of Montiel, waiting for a chance to bait him while avoiding getting hit. Montiel bit his bait, and that gave Donaire the opening for a knockout left hook that sent him to the canvass groggily. Both of his hands have knockout power that his opponent must be extra careful in getting into him. I wonder, however, if he can absorb powerful punches that are necessary in baiting. Unlike Manny Pacquiao, who usually gives his opponent breathing space after knocking him down and deciding to continue, Nonito attacked Montiel as soon as the referee signaled to proceed, though Montiel was still dazed. I pray that Nonito can get used to taking hard punches and to show that he is a gentleman boxer.

Rudy Tagimacruz, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon: Donaire was a bullet train that rammed Montiel down the rail track, shaking hard, and appeared like a drunk finding his way home.

Do your best

Rose Leobrera, Manila: Just do your best in your every fight, no matter how much skills you have and you may have practiced your utmost, when inside the ring, iba pag natiyempuhan ka, and congratulations!

Don’t let success go to your head
