From Dino Monzon of Caloocan City: Who were/ are your favorite comics characters?

-

Watching Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Sylvester and other Looney Toon characters makes me feel like a child again. Edwin Castillo, Tanauan City

My favorite is Asyong Aksaya. He is a timely reminder that we shouldn’t be wasteful in using resources.Robert Young Jr., San Juan

Wish they were real

The adventurism of Master Sleuth fascinates me no end. If he were real, we could use him in today’s crime-laden landscape. – Ludwig Aguinaldo, Digos City

I wish Darna were real so she can fight blood-sucking officials and all evils of society. – Vic Alim, Caloocan City

Superman, Batman, Phantom and Tarzan. Wish they were around to help the AFP. – G.M. Caguioa, Dagupan City

The man of steel Superman and the naked lord of the jungle Tarzan top my comic character favorites. Superman, with his superpowers, checks bad men as he hovers above earth and obliterates them if they refused to straighten themselves. It’s saddening that he is not a reality to finish off untouchable perfumed bandits who ruin our country’s economy. – Elpidio Que, Vigan

It was kid’s fun to see a thin Popeye overcome the mighty Brutus to save his Olive. I wish to have his spinach, too, to make greedy men in government experience what Brutus does. – Rose Leobrera, Manila

Homegrown

Kenkoy will always be my favorite comic character. He’s classic and most of all, a Pinoy original. – Joel Caluag, Bulacan

My favorite character in Pinoy comics is the snake-necked Zuma. He’s got the attitude and the looks to be feared. – Christopher Rivero, Bulacan

Kenkoy en Rosing, very local ang setting and very lovable ang mga characters involved. – Armando Tavera, Las Piñas City

Asyong Aksaya, Barok, Cesar Asar and Tisoy. Life before wasn’t as hard as now and they made us laugh and smile. – Jim Veneracion, Naga City

It is Prof by Rene Aranda as I’m amused with the different characters being depicted due to their relevance today. – Pedro Alagano Sr., Vigan

Kenkoy is my favorite. He’s a stereotype character reflecting Filipino behavior, values, traits and even our inane stupidities. – Rey Ibalan, Antipolo City

I have eyes only for Prof by Rene A. Aranda for it depicts relevant issues and it’s humorous also. – Romeo Caubat, Masbate

I go for the local first, Kenkoy and Tisoy of yesteryears and Prof here at Phil. STAR. For foreign naman, Peanuts. – Erwin Espinosa, Pangasinan

Kenkoy and company were my favorite comic characters since my childhood. They portrayed different Filipino characters, parodying Filipino culture, aspiration and lifestyles from have-nots to haves. I wonder where and how Tony Velasquez is now? – Germi Sison, Cabanatuan City

Zuma, the snake man. Kahit taong ahas siya, hindi siya nangungurakot. Di tulad ng marami sa kongreso. – Ricardo Tolentino, Laoag City

His language and the way he spoke were similar to our way of texting now. He delivered telegram-like messages. I like Barok much. – Janet Hernandez, Bulacan

My favorite is Darna and I guess most of us have the same choice. So popular that she has become a movie great, then and now. – Leonard Villa, Laoag City

Comic character? My favorite is Prof by Rene Aranda for his humor and jokes on our modern-day life. – Virgilio Alumnos, Cavite

Too bad for today’s youth, they missed the tandem of Kalabog en Bosyo. – Dr. Manolo Cristi, Quezon City

The wholesome duo of Kenkoy and Rosing thrilled me no end. To date, no other tandem beats them. Knowing them, one could tell my age. – Leterio Bayson, Bulacan

These days there are countless comics characters, but during our time, we only had Kenkoy. – Rodolfo Talledo, Angeles City

My uncles regularly bought Tagalog comics/magazines like Pilipino Komiks, Hiwaga, Espesyal, Tagalog Klasiks, Bulaklak and Liwayway magazines. My favorite characters then were Kulafu and OG, Kenkoy, and Kalabog en Bosyo. As a young adult in Metro Manila, Tarzan, Batman and Superman joined my list. – William Gonzaga, Marikina city

My favorite comic character is Darna, because she possesses the abilities of a great hero. Her goal is to save the world. Girl power. – Marla Raoet, Baguio City

I love Pugad Baboy characters, aside from the entertainment it gives, it is also Pinoy-made, which we should be proud of. – Ann Roldan, Baguio City

Among my favorite comics characters were: Darna, serialized in Darna Komiks, Lastikman and Jaka, serialized in Aliwan Komiks. – Judith Pascua, Davao City

Kenkoy is my favorite comic character. He is the typical Filipino male of his time and maybe up to the present. – Leandro Tolentino, Batangas City

Kenkoy and Asyong Aksaya typify our politicians. – Fred Caguioa, Dagupan City

Outgrowing heroes

It was the Batman and Robin team until someone insinuated that Batman was a sissy and Robin was actually his lover. Bading pala. – Manuel Abejero, Pangasinan

Blondie, Archie, Beetle Bailey and the Phantom. – Cesar Bacalzo, La Union

My favorite is Hagar the Horrible. – Pat Miranda, Marikina City

Batman, definitely. He is very realistic, very human. He does not fly, he has no x-ray vision, and kryptonite is okay with him. – Jimby Sanchez, San Juan

Andy Capp and Hagar live in our house under assumed names. – Czarina Caguioa, Dgupan City

My favorite cartoon is Dumbo, the flying pachyderm. Like Osibisa Woyaya, the idea was awesome. Now, Dumbo is out, Jamby is in. Okay din. – Sheldon Calupitan, Quezon City

My favorites are Rip Kirby and the amazing Spiderman. They hold me in suspense of the next episode everyday. – Christopher Bacalzo, Pasay City

As a kid, I enjoyed reading all the Marvel comics I could lay my hands on. But Popeye, with his spinach, is dead. Demolition of Brutus is my all-time favorite comic and cartoon character. – Jun Totanes, Parañaque City

Now, in STAR’s comic page, the Phantom, Rip Kirby and Spiderman are characters that make my reading always enjoyable before or after serious news items, articles or features. – William Gonzaga, Marikina City

For American comics, Dennis the Menace for his smart-aleck words with Wilson. Local, Prof by Rene Aranda for his sarcastic dialogue. – Ed Alawi, Davao City

In childhood, I liked Kulafu. In my teens, aside from the superheroes, I liked the comic strip Archie because of Veronica. In young adulthood, aside from those in my teens, I followed Rip Kirby, the Phantom and Brenda Starr. Don’t read them

I don’t read nor care for comics. – Mike Manalastas, Manila

Well, I don’t have any because I am not an avid reader of any comic book. I admit that I read some, but I do it only for when its theme appeals to me. But anyway, I enjoy looking at the drawings in it, most especially colored comics. – Ronald Dulay, Baguio City

MORE ENERGY-SAVING TIPS

I use timers on my living room lights. All our incandescent bulbs have been replaced with high-efficiency ones. We aslo use a programmable thermostats. As for our personal computers at home, although they are left on, we have replaced them with LCD monitors. Outside lights have motion sensors so they only go on when there is motion around them. – Jonathan Cabrera, Ontario, Canada

Avoid using many appliances or if you can’t avoid it, try to lessen usage between 10 am 2 pm. This is when the climate is really hot and the appliances are more susceptible to overheating. – Alvin Perez, Manila

Doing away with yellow incandescent bulbs and replacing them with white energy-saving ones is a concrete energy-saving tip and a very doable one. - Yasmin Caparas, Manila
