Love and Will

FROM THE HEART - Gina Lopez - The Philippine Star

The ability to make things happen — that is so key to building models.

I am on my way to Maguindanao to attend my first Earth Warrior training of the top eight that made it in Quest for Love. This topic is appropriate to the next phase of my work life.

One must care, but if that caring isn’t accompanied by a determination and focused will, dreams will not become reality. I am going to add another adjective — compassionate — because of the necessity to be able to connect to people. These interconnected dots are the structure that will make things happen.

If will is so important, what can be done to nurture it?

1. Practice. Difficulties are a great situation to hone will because to get out of the valley one needs fortitude. Difficulties are actually a gift because they are opportunities for growth. Will is a muscle. It must be used.

2. Discipline. Rhythm in life provides an environment for mental and spiritual growth. Will absolutely needs focus. Focus won’t happen if energies are all over the place. I have found one’s schedule to be of vital importance. I admittedly change my schedule regularly depending on “where I am at,” but the very fact of having a schedule provides a conducive environment for clarity to blossom.

Clarity is key to will — seeing the landscape of where one is internally, the landscape of the situation you want to operate in. The landscape of what has to be achieved if you will achieve your objectives. You must have a goal. To achieve it, you need to be versant about the “terrain,” both internally and externally.

3. Spirituality. Which means it should even be number one. What happens when will is used within a spiritual context? It energizes and gives joy, rather than drains and results in stress. If whatever one is going through is put in a spiritual context, that leads to a transformation of the entire experience of difficulties and nurtures the will with the sublime energies coming from the objective one wants to achieve.

I have also found the attitude of not taking everything too seriously important. Letting go is equally so. Otherwise the challenges tend to drain will energy.

I have said it before and I will say it again: Life is what we make of it. Our experience of situations absolutely depends on the way we take on life. A positive approach is invariably an energy booster for will.

In closing, keep dreaming. Keep hoping. Whatever happens in life, let it go — keep only the gems that nurture your life force. Take on an objective and go for it. Put everything you have into it. It’s good for your growth. Not trying in a way that creates tension and stress, but trying in a way that is cool but determined and focused.

It all comes with practice. Life is beautiful. You just need to go for it.
