MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police has intensified security measures ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays, deploying over 41,000 PNP personnel to ensure public safety and deter criminals.

PNP public information office chief Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said the deployment of police personnel would begin on Dec. 15.

Fajardo said police officers would not be allowed to take leave during the holidays, except for emergencies.

Enough police personnel will be fielded in areas of convergence such as shopping malls, markets and transport terminals, she said.

Police commanders have the discretion to increase personnel in densely populated locations, according to Fajardo.

PNP chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil emphasized the importance of securing public spaces during the holidays.

The PNP’s security plan includes heightened patrols, quick response teams on standby for emergencies and collaboration with other agencies, including the Armed Forces, Philippine Coast Guard and Bureau of Fire Protection.

Cybersecurity is also a priority, with the PNP’s Anti-Cybercrime Group ramping up efforts to prevent online scams and fraud.

The PNP is also prepared for mass actions related to the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
