Armed group leader nabbed for Cagayan vice mayor’s slay

MANILA, Philippines — Two men, including an alleged leader of an armed group were arrested yesterday in connection with the killing of a vice mayor and his five security escorts two years ago in Bagabag, Nueva Vizcaya.

The late vice mayor Rommel Alameda of Aparri, Cagayan and his companions were ambushed by gunmen posing as police officers on Feb. 19, 2023.

Police said alias Dennis is a leader of an armed group operating in Nueva Ecija. The other suspect is a member of the group.

The suspects, who are reportedly residents of Nueva Ecija, were arrested at past 2 p.m. in Barangay Luna in Sta. Rosa town.

The arrest was based on a warrant issued by the Bayombong Regional Trial Court Branch 28 for six counts of murder.

No bail was granted for the suspects’ temporary liberty.
