10 hurt after MRT-3 escalator malfunctions

MANILA, Philippines — Ten passengers of the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 were injured after an escalator at the MRT-3’s Taft Avenue station malfunctioned on March 8.
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) said it would shoulder the medical expenses of the passengers.
“The insurance company will assess and approve the compensation of the victims for lost income due to the incident,” the DOTr said.
The escalator was reopened on Tuesday after being repaired by MRT-3 personnel and Japanese maintenance provider Sumitomo Corp.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon has apologized to the affected passengers.
The incident signals the need to privatize the MRT-3, according to the DOTr.
“This event reinforces the agency’s commitment to the privatization of transportation infrastructure, such as the MRT-3, to enhance safety and convenience for commuters,” the DOTr said.
Based on earlier reports, the DOTr is looking for a new operator of the state-owned rail line as its concession with Metro Rail Transit Corp. ends this year.
Metro Pacific Investments Corp. is reportedly among the firms sending unsolicited proposals to the government for MRT-3’s operation.
