COTABATO CITY— A Muslim preacher passed away on Tuesday, January 14, when a large tree uprooted by strong winds fell onto his small house in Barangay Buayan, Datu Piang, Maguindanao del Sur, trapping him underneath.

Investigators in the Datu Piang Municipal Police Station and local officials told reporters on Thursday, January 16, that the Islamic theologian Ustadz Abdulbayan Bantao was already lifeless when he was pulled out by emergency responders from the lumber, galvanized roof sheets and branches of the trees that fell on him.

Policemen and a team from the Datu Piang local government unit even used a chainsaw to cut into pieces the tree that hit and destroyed Bantao’s house to enable them to pull him out.

Bantao, a teacher in Islamic schools in interior barangays in Datu Piang, was immediately buried by relatives in keeping with a religious tradition of burying the dead within 24 hours after death.
