EDSA to be rehabilitated in 2025
MANILA, Philippines — EDSA, one of the country’s primary roads, is set for a long-delayed rehabilitation, according to Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Manuel Bonoan.
In a televised public briefing, Bonoan said that the order came from President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
“Ang gusto ni Presidente dapat we have to improve actually iyong riding quality of EDSA. We will rehabilitate the entire EDSA starting 2025,” Bonoan said on Wednesday, January 8.
(The president wants to improve the quality of EDSA. We will rehabilitate the entire EDSA starting 2025.)
Bonoan reasoned that passing through EDSA has become difficult. The roads have become uneven.
“When you pass by EDSA, sometimes it is hard to text because the car is shaky. So I think it’s about time that we need to rehabilitate EDSA once and for all,” Bonoan said in a mix of English and Filipino.
Bonoan did not elaborate on the start date of the renovation.
In a separate interview on TeleRadyo Serbisyo's "Johnson, Ikwento Mo!", Bonoan explained that the broken sections of EDSA would be repaired with new concrete, and that the drainage systems may also need to be revamped.
The entire stretch of EDSA will not be closed; instead, the rehabilitation will be carried out in segments.
Philstar.com reached out to Bonoan for more details about the upcoming renovation and the government's preparations to mitigate potential traffic disruptions. This story will be updated once he responds.
Philstar.com also contacted Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chair Romando Artes and Department of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista. Artes has yet to respond, while Bautista declined to comment, stating that the project falls under the DPWH's jurisdiction.
In the DPWH’s P1.007 trillion budget for 2025, there was no specific allocation for the renovation of EDSA. However, P1.6 billion was set aside for the "Maintenance, Repair, and Rehabilitation of Infrastructure Facilities and Other Related Activities - Routine Maintenance of National Roads."
During the interview on TeleRadyo, Bonoan clarified that the budget for the EDSA rehabilitation totals P7 billion, although a portion of this amount will come from the 2026 budget.
