MANILA, Philippines — Leyte Rep. Richard Gomez is proposing legislation that will ban soda and other sugary drinks in all government offices to help address the country’s diabetes problem.

In House Bill 10708, Gomez said the consumption of soft drinks and other sugary drinks has been “consistently linked to numerous health issues which pose a significant public health challenge.”

“The high sugar content in these beverages contributes to excessive calorie intake without providing essential nutrients, leading to weight gain and obesity,” the bill’s explanatory note stated.

In particular, the measure indicated that regular consumption of sugary drinks is associated with an increased risk of Type 2 diabetes, which occurs when blood glucose or blood sugar is too high.

Gomez added that his proposed bill complements other health policies and programs, such as the National Nutrition Council’s initiatives to promote healthy eating habits and the Department of Health’s campaign against lifestyle-related diseases.

Under the measure, the procurement and sale of soda and other sweet drinks in government offices can lead to “lower health care costs associated with treating obesity, diabetes, heart diseases and dental problems.”

It stated that the savings generated from this can be “redirected towards more productive and preventive health initiatives.
