MANILA, Philippines — English pop rock band Duran Duran entertained guests at a birthday party for President Marcos organized – at no cost to the government – by his friends last Friday in Pasay, Malacañang said yesterday.

In successive Facebook posts, Sass Rogando Sasot, a vlogger and supporter of former president Rodrigo Duterte, claimed that Duran Duran was flown in to hold a private concert for Marcos’ birthday at the Marriott Hotel.

The vlogger called on Filipinos to attend the gathering, saying it was funded by their taxes.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) confirmed that a birthday party for Marcos had taken place in a Pasay hotel and that Duran Duran had performed during the event. Sources told The STAR that around 80 people attended the party.

“After a tiring day filled with official engagements, he attended a party thrown by his old friends at a hotel in Pasay, and to his surprise and appreciation, music was provided by Duran Duran,” the government’s lead communication arm said in a statement.

In a text message, PCO Secretary Cesar Chavez said the party was held “at no cost to the government.”

Duran Duran is behind the 80s hits “Ordinary World,” “Save a Prayer,” “The Wild Boys,” “The Reflex” and “A View to a Kill.”

The PCO’s statement detailed Marcos’ public engagements last Friday, including his delivery of assistance to farmers and patients of government hospitals.

“The President spent his birthday as just another busy day in the office, with the same dedication to his job that has marked his presidency,” the agency said.

“The President celebrated his birthday with his signature compassion for the needy and the sick, and his deep appreciation for the farmers who feed the nation,” it added.
