ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Amid political bickering in the country, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner told AFP members to remain apolitical, stick with the chain of command and be loyal to the Constitution.

Brawner issued the statement last Saturday when he addressed the troops at the 18th anniversary of the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom) based in this city.

He directed the troops not to be swayed and affected by the feuding of political leaders over social media.

The AFP chief was also quick to dispel that his call could be related to possible coup rumors or military adventurism.

“No, there is no such thing and don’t quote me on that (on rumors). What I am saying is, because there are a lot of things we see in the social media – such as the ‘kadiliman’ or ‘kasamaan,’ (issue with the Vice President) or even the clashing of the political leaders – but for us, I told the troops let’s not be affected, let’s focus on our job because we have a lot of challenges. It’s just like that,” Brawner said.

Meanwhile, Brawner commended the Westmincom, led by Lt. Gen. William Gonzales, which has been successful in addressing various threats, including terrorism and insurgency, since its activation 18 years ago when Southern Command (Southcom) was deactivated in 2006 and divided into two unit commands in Mindanao.

He said the activation was a wise decision that gave the Westmincom the chance to focus on certain threat groups.

Brawner further commended Westmincom for its remarkable efforts in dismantling terror groups, and for being the first military unit in the country to demolish the first communist regional party committee and its fronts.

“Your work has not been easy, but your sacrifices have been essential in securing the Filipino people,” he said.
