MANILA, Philippines — All schools nationwide have opened their doors to learners for school year 2024-2025 after facing class opening delays due to heavy rains and floods in the past week, the Department of Education (DepEd) announced yesterday.

The DepEd said no more schools are being used as evacuation centers and all schools have reverted to their normal operations.

The 42 remaining schools in Malabon City finally opened the school year for their learners yesterday after classes were suspended last Monday due to heavy rain and the high tide.

During the opening of classes last July 29, over 1,000 schools based in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, Ilocos region, Calabarzon and Soccsksargen remained closed due to the impact of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon.

The DepEd said the cost required for reconstruction and rehabilitation of damaged classrooms is pegged at P1.6 billion, with 355 classrooms totally damaged while 1,555 sustained partial damage.

Meanwhile, over 24 million students nationwide have enrolled for SY 2024-2025.

Based on latest DepEd data, 24,178,797 students have so far enrolled, representing about 87 percent of its target of 27,722,835 enrollees for this school year.

“We are optimistic in maintaining the momentum in the coming days,” the DepEd said in a statement, adding that schools would be accepting enrollees until Sept. 16.

The breakdown showed that 21,115,238 students are enrolled in public schools; 2,732,184 students are enrolled in private schools; 40,914 students are enrolled in state and local universities and colleges offering basic education and 290,461 students are enrolled under the Alternative Learning System.

Per education level, elementary schools have the most number of enrollees with 13,426,294 students, followed by junior high schools with 7,091,459 and senior high schools with 3,370,583.

Most enrollees come from Calabarzon with over 3.5 million, followed by Central Luzon with over 2.5 million and the National Capital Region with over 2.4 million.
