LTO: No crackdown yet on light e-vehicles

MANILA, Philippines — There will be no crackdown yet on light electric vehicles as the Land Transportation Office (LTO) continues its information dissemination on the registration of LEVs.

LTO chief Vigor Mendoza said that for now, the agency is only strictly enforcing regulations on LEVs on major national roads in Metro Manila.

Mendoza said they are still in dialogue with local government units (LGU), as well as LEV owners, on the use of the e-vehicles on public roads.

“We won’t crack down on LEVs yet, except on national roads like South Super Highway and EDSA. No crackdown because we are not yet done with the information dissemination with LGUs,” he said in a chance interview with reporters.

Mendoza noted that LGUs are the ones determining where LEVs will be allowed to ply on their national and local roads.

Last March, the LTO released a memorandum requiring e-bikes and e-trikes to have registration and licensed drivers on all public roads nationwide.

The regulations were set to take effect in April, but have since been postponed to make way for information campaigns.

Mendoza urged LEV owners to have their units registered or they may face citation tickets with repeated violations.
