Magnitude 6.8 quake rattles Surigao del Sur

MANILA, Philippines — A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck offshore in Surigao del Sur early morning yesterday but posed no tsunami threat to the country, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The quake was recorded 66 kilometers northeast of the municipality of Lingig at 6:22 a.m.

The tremor was tectonic in origin and had a depth of focus of nine kms.

Intensity V was recorded in Lingig, Hinatuan and Bislig City in Surigao del Sur, Rosario in Agusan del Sur and Maco and Monkayo in Davao de Oro.

Intensity IV was recorded in Nabunturan in Davao de Oro and in Davao City while Intensity III was recorded in Don Marcelino in Davao Occidental, Inabanga in Bohol and Baybay City in Leyte.

Intensity II was recorded in Mambajao in Camiguin, Sogod in Southern Leyte, Cotabato City and Datu Odin Sinsuat in Maguindanao.

A magnitude 6.2 earthquake, an aftershock, was recorded at 12:20 p.m.

It had a shallow depth of two kms and was recorded 84 kms from Lingig town.
