MANILA, Philippines —  The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson’s mischaracterizing the successful Philippine resupply mission to Filipino troops stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal on Saturday is “unfortunate,” the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said yesterday.

“Instead of acknowledging how two countries were able to manage differences in order to avoid miscalculation and misunderstanding, the spokesperson chose to misrepresent what has been agreed between the Philippines and China regarding RORE missions in Ayungin Shoal,” DFA spokesperson Ma. Teresita Daza said.

The DFA bellied China’s misleading claims that prior notification and onsite inspection for resupply missions are contained in the provisional agreement with the Philippines.

China again claimed on Saturday that it was informed by the Philippines and it agreed to onsite inspection.

“Let us make it absolutely clear: the understanding between the Philippines and China was concluded in good faith, with the explicit agreement that it will not prejudice national positions. It is not helpful to keep giving false notions about what has been agreed on and how they were implemented,” Daza added.

Daza emphasized that the “Philippines’ core positions on West Philippine Sea issues remain clear and consistent, including as regards our legally settled maritime entitlements and our lawful right to conduct routine activities within our own exclusive economic zone.

“The BRP Sierra Madre is a commissioned naval vessel and its presence in Ayungin Shoal is well within the Philippines’ sovereign rights and jurisdiction,” Daza stated.

“The Philippines remains committed to the peaceful settlement of disputes, including through dialogue and consultation, and will honor the understanding on RORE missions. We expect China will also adhere to the understanding as negotiated,” she said.
