PETA asks pet owners: Don’t leave pets behind

MANILA, Philippines —  The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) yesterday asked pet owners not to leave their pets behind if they need to evacuate because of flooding or landslide caused by Typhoon Carina.

In a statement, the animal rights group issued an “urgent advisory” to save the lives of animals, amid the reports of heavy flooding, landslides and damaged homes because of the heavy rainfall.

PETA also reminded people not to leave the animals caged or confined in any way, as they will be trapped and unable to flee rising floodwaters.

For pet owners who live in houses with a second floor, animals should have access to higher ground in case they need to escape rising floodwaters.

The group shared tips on how to evacuate pets, such as placing them in secure cages and taking them away from frightening sounds and unfamiliar surroundings.

Pet owners should also take their pets’ water and food bowls, toys and blankets when they evacuate. The group also reminded them to store enough food for their pets that will last for one week.

People should also be on the lookout for other animals that may need help, such as strays and animals that have been left behind by neighbors.
