‘Philippines will not yield or waver in defending West Philippine Sea’
MANILA, Philippines — In line with President Marcos’ marching orders, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) yesterday emphasized it would not yield or waver in securing and defending the country’s sovereignty in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
The military thanked Marcos for recognizing soldiers’ sacrifices during his third State of the Nation Address on Monday.
“We heard President Marcos’ call to not yield in the defense and protection of our territory and sovereign rights. This is a call that will always be heeded by those in the profession of arms, a duty and mandate that will always rally the brave sons and daughters of our nation,” AFP chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said.
“The AFP fully supports the President’s strategy of a fair and pacific approach, emphasizing a rules-based international order and efforts toward de-escalation. We believe in the importance of
maintaining peace and stability through diplomatic means and constructive dialogue,” he added.
The AFP is also thankful for the Marcos administration’s unwavering support of its modernization efforts and push toward self-reliance, which are essential to strengthening the country’s defense capabilities.
“We fully commit to the whole-of-nation approach and the fulfillment of our government’s obligations and agreements aimed at ending decades of strife and ushering just and lasting peace in the country,” Brawner said.
“In the performance of our mandate, the AFP remains committed to raising awareness about the intergenerational duty of all Filipinos to protect the West Philippine Sea. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that our maritime domains are preserved for future generations,” he added.
AFP spokesperson Col. Francel Margareth Padilla said the President’s acknowledgment of the military’s efforts to safeguard the Philippine territory is an “inspiration to all our personnel.”
Philippine Navy spokesman for the WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said Marcos’ support “will further strengthen the resolve to perform our mandate above and beyond the call of duty.” — Sheila Crisostomo, Evelyn Macairan, Delon Porcalla, Jose Rodel Clapano
