The contest was participated in by 12 countries, with math powerhouses China, Thailand and Bulgaria dominating the medal tally.
The Philippine team, composed of eight members, all Grades 5 and 6 students from various private schools, was able to bring home two silver and three bronze medals plus two trophies.
“We’re happy for our mathletes and also their respective families and schools,” Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) Philippines head Simon Chua said in a press statement.
This year’s PMWC drew over 120 contestants from the Philippines, Bulgaria, Nepal, South Africa, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Macau, China and Hong Kong.
Meanwhile, the MTG said 11 more math aces would be representing the Philippines this weekend at the World Mathematics Olympiad Fusion, also to be held in Hong Kong.
Last month, two groups of MTG-trained students brought home a total of 59 medals, including four gold medals, from the International Math Wizards Challenge in Bogor, Indonesia and the Global Math Competition in Hanoi, Vietnam.
