PNP to procure body cameras with AI
MANILA, Philippines — Police officers will soon have body-worn cameras with artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities.
Philippine National Police chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil said the body cameras they will purchase will be infused with facial recognition technology, which can be used to identify wanted persons.
Marbil said the body camera will sound an alarm if it recognizes a wanted person.
“A person with a warrant will be easily identified by our body cams,” he said in an interview over Radyo Pilipinas on Friday.
Marbil has ordered intensified operations against people with arrest warrants, especially high-value suspects who are accused of heinous crimes.
“This will be the priority of the police, so people may know that crime does not pay,” he said.
The PNP earlier said it will procure around 4,000 body cameras this year.
Last January, the PNP utilized 2,956 body cameras, below the target of 40,000 to 45,000.
The PNP opted to purchase body-worn cameras to ensure transparency and legitimacy of police operations.
