MANILA, Philippines — The Makabayan has offered itself to be the “genuine opposition” in next year’s midterm polls, saying the country’s two leading political leaders now are only after their personal interests.
In a statement posted on X, Makabayan noted that Marcos and Duterte do not really care about the welfare of Filipinos.
It added the factions of the leading political figures do nothing but bicker, “unmindful of the sufferings of the ordinary people.”
Makabayan underscored it is about time for the country to go towards a new direction and it is willing to lead the way.
“The Philippines is now at the crossroads. Are we going to go the way of misfortune or we’ll tread the right way towards a new society?” it added.
To spearhead these changes, Makabayan said it would be fielding 12 candidates for senators in next year’s elections.
These candidates, it claimed, do not come from affluent and political families.
“They are not into corruption and defenders of the few. We are proud that they come from the sectors of workers, farmers, women, youth, fishermen, indigenous communities and other sectors which have long lost their voice in Congress,” Makabayan said.
