MANILA, Philippines — Renaming the Department of Health will be further studied, according to DOH Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo.
Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa had floated the idea of renaming the DOH as the Department of Health and Wellness.
Domingo said yesterday that this is a “sound idea…anchored on a broad understanding of the ultimate goal of public health.”
The World Health Organization charter, he said, defines health as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
In a televised interview, Herbosa said, “We also want to teach the people about health promotion – how to maintain your health.”
Meanwhile, the DOH welcomed Sen. Sonny Angara’s appointment as education secretary.
“Health and education are natural partners in the development of our nation. The prevention and control of disease as well as the promotion of wellness begins in the hearts and minds of our children,” the DOH said.
