MANILA, Philippines — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s surprise visit to the Philippines is meant to portray President Marcos as the new poster boy of the United States’ proxy war against China, the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) said yesterday.

The NDFP described the Philippine and Ukrainian governments as puppet regimes being used by the US to advance its geopolitical ambitions.

“By aligning Marcos Jr. as a parallel of Zelensky, the US is positioning the Philippines as a key player in its broader strategy to counter its imperialist rival – China,” the NDFP said.

“In reality, the US only seeks war against China to secure its own hegemonic interests in the Asia Pacific,” it added.

Zelensky visited Manila on Monday as part of his efforts to drum up support for a peace summit in Switzerland.

Ukraine, which is currently being invaded by Russia, has complained that China is blocking global participation in the summit.

Filipinos should not be hoodwinked into thinking the US will protect the Philippines if war breaks out against China over the West Philippine Sea, the NDFP said.

The International People’s Tribunal’s recent verdict finding Marcos and former president Rodrigo Duterte guilty of war crimes and violating international humanitarian law underscored the role of the US in implementing counter-insurgency operations in the Philippines, it added.

Atrocities committed by the Marcos and Duterte administrations are similar to war crimes committed against Ukraine, the NDFP said.
