Manila Water spending P800 million to expand Mandaluyong sewers

MANILA, Philippines — Manila Water Co. Inc. (Manila Water) of tycoon Enrique Razon is spending P800 million to expand its sewer services coverage in the East Zone that is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of next year.

The company said it is bankrolling the Mandaluyong West Packages 3A and 3B to complement its ongoing 52.5-kilometer Mandaluyong West-San Juan and South Quezon City Sewerage System (MandaWest) project.

The P306-million Package A and the P494-million Package B sewer pipe-laying projects are “vital sections” of the MandaWest project, the water utility firm said.

Aside from expanding the sewer coverage in the East Zone, the two packages would also “aid in the restoration of Manila Bay,” according to Manila Water.

“Wastewater projects like MandaWest Packages 3A and 3B are important to Manila Water’s sustainability goals as we continue to expand our sewage and sanitation services to the entire East Zone,” Manila Water’s corporate communications affairs group director Jeric Sevilla said yesterday.

The East Zone concessionaire earlier disclosed that the P4.2-billion MandaWest project Package 1 would be completed by the end of the year.

The project would have a 60-million-liter-per-day (MLD) capacity sewer treatment plant, which is expandable to 120 MLD, and would include one major pump station, 13 lift stations, 276 interceptor boxes and a 16-channel interceptor.

Manila Water said the MandaWest project would serve 704,260 residents of Mandaluyong, San Juan and Quezon City by 2037.
