MANILA, Philippines — Three Filipinos died in the severe flooding in the United Arab Emirates, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported yesterday.
“With extreme sadness, we report the death of 3 OFWs during the flooding in UAE, “ DMW officer-in-charge Hans Cacdac posted on X, referring to overseas Filipino workers.
Cacdac said two of the victims died of suffocation inside their vehicle that got stalled in the flood while the third died from injuries after his vehicle fell into a sinkhole at the height of the flooding. No other details were given.
He said the Migrant Workers Offices and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration offices in Dubai and Abu Dhabi are working closely to provide assistance to the families of the three Filipinos.
The Philippine government is readying food and other essential commodities for Filipinos staying in areas affected by severe flooding in the Emirates.
The MWO-Dubai’s public assistance and training areas were flooded but have since been cleaned.
In Oman, DMW said, no Filipinos are staying in the severely affected villages.
Meanwhile, the DMW continues to monitor the condition of Filipinos in quake-affected areas in Japan.
In an advisory, the DMW ordered employers in Ehime and Kochi prefectures to report the condition or any incidents involving overseas Filipino workers.
“Initial assessments indicate no reports of injuries or deaths involving our OFWs. Nevertheless, MWOs Tokyo and Osaka will continue monitoring the situation and work closely with the Consulate General in Osaka and the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo,” the DMW said.
A 6.6-magnitude earthquake rocked two prefectures in western Japan Wednesday night.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported the quake’s epicenter at the Bungo Suido channel, south of Osaka.
The earthquake did not cause a tsunami but tremors of magnitude 1 to 4 were detected in the surrounding Shikoku, Kyushu and Chugoku regions of southwest Honshu, Japan’s main island.
