CAMP VICENTE LIM, Laguna, Philippines — Augmentation forces will be deployed to secure the Masungi Georeserve and protect it against illegal logging, land grabbing, quarrying and other threats.

The deployment aims to bolster security measures, safeguard tourists and visitors and preserve the environment within the area, according to Calabarzon police director Brig. Gen. Paul Kenneth Lucas.

Acting on Interior Secretary Benhur Abalos’ directive, Lucas ordered the augmentation of the eight members of the Regional Mobile Force Battalion 4A to resume their duties and reinforce security measures at the Masungi Georeserve in Rizal.

Lucas also relieved from his post the company commander of the 404thA Maneuver Company Forward Platoon pending investigation of the alleged abandonment of his post in his area of jurisdiction.

Calabarzon police spokesperson Lt. Col. Chitadel Gaoiran withheld the identity of the relieved commander due to the ongoing probe. The deputy will automatically be the officer-in-charge while waiting for a replacement.

“The police presence at the Masungi Georeserve underscores our dedication to ensure peace and order while prioritizing the protection of our natural resources,” Lucas said in a statement.

The Masungi Georeserve is found within a 26,000-hectare protected area, which benefits five municipalities in Rizal: Antipolo, Baras, Rodriguez, San Mateo and Tanay.

The area regulates water flow toward the National Capital Region.

It is home to more than 400 species of flora and fauna, several of which are rare and threatened.

“This national treasure deserves protection and preservation. What a magnificent and magical place!” Canadian Ambassador David Hartman posted on X, formerly Twitter, on Sunday.
