‘Probe ex-lawmaker over disrespectful remarks vs First Lady’

MANILA, Philippines — An official of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) yesterday asked the Supreme Court to investigate and look into the possible disbarment of former Biliran representative Glenn Chong over his alleged “reprehensible remarks” against First Lady Liza Marcos.

In a letter to Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, BI deputy commissioner Daniel Laogan said Chong’s alleged remarks against Marcos were not only “unethical” but also violative of the code of professional conduct for lawyers.

Laogan was referring to the statement Chong made in public, allegedly saying that he would “slap” the First Lady.

According to Laogan, the remark was made during the recent prayer rally in support of pastor Apollo Quiboloy in Manila.

“Such reprehensible remarks not only demoralize the dignity of Atty. Liza Araneta-Marcos as the first lady of our country but also reflect a disturbing attitude towards women in general,” the letter read.“This matter shall be thoroughly investigated by the appropriate authorities to warrant accountability and uphold the integrity of our legal profession,” it added.
