MANILA, Philippines — Spending more time with family and keeping himself healthy are among President Marcos’ New Year’s resolutions.
“My New Year’s resolution is really simple, I’d like to spend more time with my family… I hardly see them because of course we’re busy and they’re busy too,” Marcos said in his latest vlog posted on YouTube on Saturday night.
The 66-year-old President also emphasized the importance of making one’s health a priority.
“I will continue what I used to do, that I watch my food, I take care of my health, I always exercise to reduce stress and keep my body strong even if I get COVID again,” Marcos said in jest.
The Chief Executive contracted COVID-19 in December last year, his third bout with the disease. He first tested positive in March 2020 and, again, in July 2022.
Marcos embarked on 12 official foreign trips, including the US and Japan, in 2023 alone.
The President, however, said remaining high on his agenda is his aspiration for a Bagong Pilipinas (New Philippines) – his brand of governance – saying “there is still much to be done.”
“We’ll reach the new Philippines through new Filipinos,” Marcos said in Filipino. “Let’s not think about big New Year’s resolutions, let’s just start with ourselves, with our families.”
He encouraged Filipinos to also work for change and self-improvement, starting with being punctual and more productive in their work, and prudent on their spending.
“First of all, don’t be late for work, be always on time… Don’t leave the job until it’s done, until you can be proud of what you have done,” the Chief Executive said.
He also encouraged Filipinos to develop a habit of saving “no matter how small.” “We have to think that way. If you don’t really need it, don’t spend it.”
This is aside from urging them to improve and develop themselves by reading books, learning new technologies, and observing personal grooming and self-discipline.
“I will read one book a month. We need to learn,” he said, noting that everyone, including the labor force, needs to catch up with the latest technology in order to be competitive.
He also urged Filipinos to stay healthy and keep themselves productive.
“When you say diet it doesn’t mean that you’re not going to eat, just choose the food you eat because when you’re healthy you can be more productive,” Marcos said.
“Another good thing I learned is that you should always be doing something. Don’t be unproductive,” he added.
Marcos likewise gave advice to Filipinos to prevent road rage.
“I will promise to keep my cool, especially when driving. Road rages are senseless,” the President said, noting that, as someone who drives, he understands the situation of motorists.
In concluding his vlog, Marcos said Bagong Pilipinas would be felt by Filipinos even more.
“We will intensify our campaign to encourage everyone to be part of the beautification of our barangays, cities, provinces and the entire country because there is no new Philippines without new Filipinos,” he said.
