PAGASA: Enough water in Angat even with El Niño
MANILA, Philippines — The water level at Angat Dam is enough to last through the dry season amid the ongoing El Niño, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.
PAGASA hydrologist Edgar dela Cruz said Angat’s current elevation of 213.33 meters is above the normal high water level.
“We have adequate water and I believe it can last us through the dry season that will occur during the first and second quarters of 2024,” Dela Cruz said.
He noted that despite the lower-than-average number of tropical cyclones that entered the country this year, there was enough rainfall due to other weather systems such as low-pressure areas and the shear line.
Angat has opened one of its gates to slowly release water as the normal high water level has been breached.
“Angat is slowly releasing water because its level has gone above the normal high. Water is released slowly so low-lying areas will not be submerged during heavy rain,” Dela Cruz said.
He, however, urged the public to conserve water and energy, especially during the dry or summer season, to ensure adequate supply.
PAGASA said Metro Manila and neighboring areas that depend on Angat may face problems once the reservoir’s water level drops to 180 meters and below.
Supply for households and irrigation may be regulated once the water level reaches this level.
