MANILA, Philippines — Five Philippine universities, led by the University of the Philippines, landed in the second Quacquarelli-Symonds (QS) World University Sustainability Rankings, which tracks higher education institutions’ ability to tackle the world’s most pressing environmental, social and governance challenges.

For the second straight year, UP emerged as the top Philippine university in sustainability, ranking 231st in the world after being placed in the 401-450 bracket in last year’s edition.

Ateneo de Manila University entered the 2024 rankings for the first time at 593rd place, making it the second top-performing university in sustainability in the country.

De La Salle University’s sustainability performance, meanwhile, fell by about 300 places to the 981-1,000 bracket from the 601+ bracket last year, making it 3rd among Filipino universities.

The University of Santo Tomas and Mapúa University also debuted in the sustainability rankings at the 1,0001-1050 and 1,201+ brackets, respectively.

The report, released on Dec. 5, ranked about 1,400 universities globally this year.

The sustainability rankings are among the quality assessments conducted on colleges and universities nationwide by QS, a British higher education networking company.

The World University Rankings for sustainability was launched in 2022 and ranked about 700 educational institutions in its 2023 report.
