MANILA, Philippines — Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte is urging the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) to remain committed to its legal defense of indigents, lauding public defenders for increasing the fighting chance of vulnerable members of society in safeguarding their rights.

During the 5th National Convention of PAO’s rank-and-file employees, Duterte emphasized that PAO has become “a symbol of justice, ensuring that no one is left behind or forgotten in the pursuit of a fair and just society,” making their efforts all the more needed to render justice for the needy.

“As we gather here today, let us be reminded of the core purpose of the PAO – to serve the indigent Filipinos. It is through your excellence in service that countless lives have been transformed, and justice has been rendered to those who need it the most,” she said.

“Your unwavering commitment to upholding the rights of the marginalized is truly commendable, and it is in this spirit that we urge you to continue providing excellent services,” she added.

The Vice President also thanked PAO for supporting the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education’s projects.

Last month, she signed with PAO and the Commission on Elections a memorandum of agreement that provides legal assistance to teachers who would serve as members of an electoral board and other DepEd personnel who would be involved in the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections.

“May we all continue to work towards a society where justice knows no boundaries and where the rights of every Filipino are protected and upheld. Let us never waver in our pursuit of justice, for it is through our collective efforts that we can create a brighter future for all,” Duterte said.

“Let us continue to stand united in our pursuit of justice, ensuring that the rights of every Filipino, especially the poor, helpless, and defenseless, are safeguarded,” she added.
