MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) announced on Sunday that it will launch pilot implementation of the revised Kindergarten to Grade 10 (K-10) curriculum in basic education in various regions in the country, beginning on September 25.

A total of 35 schools have been chosen to participate in this test run of the new MATATAG K-10 curriculum, which was officially introduced on August 10.

Out of the 35 schools, five are located in the National Capital Region, specifically within Malabon City.

There are five more schools selected to take part in the initial implementation from each of the following regions:

  • Cordillera Administrative Region
  • Ilocos Region
  • Cagayan Valley
  • Central Visayas
  • Soccsksargen
  • Caraga

Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas, DepEd deputy spokesperson, previously said that the department plans to gather and assess all the findings and results from the test phase to ensure a smooth transition as they prepare for a gradual rollout in the coming years.

The rollout of the new curriculum will follow a staggered five-year plan.

The curriculum is scheduled to be rolled out first in School Year 2024 to 2025 in kindergarten and grades 1, 4 and 7.

In SY 2025-2026, it will extend to grades 2, 5 and 8.

Grades 3, 6 and 9 will adopt the new curriculum in SY 2026-2027.

The final phase will be the introduction of the new curriculum to grade 10 students in SY 2027-2028.

The revised curriculum, as Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte pointed out earlier, will reintroduce foundational elements of education, focusing on literacy and numeracy competencies. It aims to equip learners with 21st-century skills. — with a report from Cristina Chi
