MANILA, Philippines — Business tycoon Lucio Tan, head of the conglomerate Lucio Tan Group of Companies (LTGC), recently received the first Golden Bell Award from the local government of Cabuyao City for helping the city hasten its economic development and protect the environment.
Tan, a known philanthropist, has donated a piece of property to the local government for the construction of a road to alleviate traffic in the city.
Cabuyao Mayor Dennis Hain said the road is vital in easing traffic, which has been a growing concern.
Hain said the decongestion of traffic would help reduce gas emissions caused by the build up of vehicles along roads leading to the old highway.
The LTGC donation will pave the way for a modern infrastructure that will help reduce pollution and protect the environment and the people.
The traffic improvement will cut travel time and smoothen journey for workers and students.
The ease of transportation will facilitate the growth of businesses and bring positive impact on the local economy and commerce in the city.
Tan also chairs the Tan Yan Kee Foundation Inc.(TYKFI), a 37-year-old non-government organization with an environmental program that is focused on the protection of forests, wildlife, mangroves and water resources.
The TYKFI also has a food security program that promotes production of fresh vegetables and fruits.
Sen. Imee Marcos was the guest speaker of the awarding ceremony held recently at the Manila Hotel.
