DepEd: Enrollees still below target
MANILA, Philippines — Several days after the opening of classes, the enrollment in basic education is still below the target set by the Department of Education (DepEd).
As of 2 p.m. on Aug. 31, the DepEd reported a total enrollment of 24,772,003 in public and private kindergarten, elementary and high schools, as well in Philippine schools overseas and under the Alternative Learning System (ALS).
The agency originally estimated an enrollment of 28.8 million students, similar to the figure last school year.
Based on the breakdown, Region IV-A had the most number of enrollees at 3,672,271, followed by Region III with 2,753,328 and Metro Manila with 2,597,582.
It was followed by Region VII with 1,916,234, Region VI with 1,812,863 and Region V with 1,579,693.
There were 15,483 students enrolled in Philippine schools overseas and 217,631 under ALS.
DepEd officials earlier expressed confidence that the enrollment will reach the target in the coming weeks as schools are still ready to accept late enrollees.
Under DepEd’s policy, schools are allowed to accept late enrollees provided that the student will still be able to meet 80 percent of the prescribed number of school days and the quarterly requirement to pass the grade level.
The agency has yet to announce the date of the last day of late enrollment.
