DHSUD inspects Pasig riverbank for rehabilitation

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) has started inspection of key areas along the Pasig River to map out rehabilitation plans, including the relocation of informal settler families (ISFs) as well as the creation of tourism spots and an alternative transportation system.

DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar and key agency officials yesterday inspected portions of the Pasig River in Manila, particularly the back of Central Post Office, which is being eyed as the pilot area for mixed-use development and tourism spot, and the Parola Compound where several ISFs are situated.

By virtue of President Marcos’ Executive Order 35 issued last month, DHSUD is tasked to head the Inter-Agency Council for the Pasig River Urban Development (IAC-PRUD), which was created to “facilitate and ensure the full rehabilitation of the banks along the Pasig River water system and nearby water systems in order to provide alternative transportation, propel economic opportunities and boost tourism activities.”

Acuzar said he already met with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Romando Artes, vice chair of the IAC-PRUD, to discuss the council’s initial steps to put the EO 35’s provisions into “actionable strategies” for the member-agencies.

The council was also mandated to “study, prepare and implement a comprehensive shelter plan for massive relocation of informal settler families and other unauthorized or unlawful occupants along the Pasig River banks.”

EO 35 states that the council shall identify suitable relocation sites for the ISFs and come up with long-term solutions to address ongoing migration into the Pasig River banks.
