MANILA, Philippines — The Filipino community in Canada has secured approval, after many years, for the installation of a Rizal monument in a park overlooking Niagara Falls, one of North America’s Seven Natural Wonders.

Rizal, the Philippines’ national hero, traveled to Canada and visited the waterfalls back in 1888.

The monument will consist of the existing historical marker donated by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines in 1998 and a bronze bust of Rizal.

“Rizal continues to inspire Filipinos and non-Filipinos alike all over the world to value freedom and make a difference. It would be wonderful to have a Rizal memorial next to one of the most amazing spots on earth,” said Consul General Angelica Escalona.

The Philippine consulate general in Toronto visited the City of Niagara Falls to attend the Niagara Fiesta Extravaganza and meet the Filipino community in the city.

Escalona also thanked the mayor of Niagara Falls, Jim Diodati, for the city’s continued support of the Filipino community.
