MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos yesterday directed agencies to strengthen programs that would benefit persons with disabilities (PWDs) and sustain campaigns that would remove the stigma and discrimination against them.
In a speech delivered by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin during the 30th Apolinario Mabini Awards at Malacañang, Marcos gave assurance that the government remains dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by PWDs so that they can fully participate in shaping society.
“I trust that the DSWD (Department of Social Welfare and Development), DOH (Department of Health), local government units (LGUs) and all partner agencies shall continue to strengthen our programs and services that encourage PWDs to take part in nation-building,” Marcos said.
“Continue advocacies that reduce prejudices and promote acceptance and empowerment of PWDs to eliminate the stigma, discrimination and exclusion,” he added.
The President also called on the private sector to create inclusive workspaces that would create equal employment opportunities for PWDs and uphold culture that values diversity and equality.
The Apolinario Mabini Awards, launched in 1974 by the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled, seeks to recognize individuals, groups and agencies that have made outstanding contributions to PWDs and promote wider recognition of disabled persons as self-respecting, self-reliant and productive members of society.
