Lost plaza reopens in Caloocan
MANILA, Philippines — Plaza Rizal in Caloocan City, long considered “lost,” has been restored and is now open to the public.
The park, built during the US colonial era, was reopened in a ceremony led by Caloocan City Mayor Along Malapitan on July 14.
The public park, reputed to be “one of the most elegant plazas at the time,” was built and donated to the local government by philanthropist Santiago Araneta in honor of his son, according to city officials.
However, the park – located on A. Mabini street – fell into neglect and was eventually overwhelmed by residential and commercial buildings.
At present, a statue of Rizal on a concrete platform dominates the gated public park, which features a tennis court and physical exercise equipment.
Malapitan’s name and his slogan “Aksyon at Malasakit” are prominently displayed at the tennis court area.
The reopening pushed through amid inclement weather.
