MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Education (DepEd) might implement changes to the Philippines’ grading and recognition system as part of the ongoing review of the country’s basic education system.

“Since we will revise curriculum effective school year 2024-2025, it comes with a revision or modification of our classroom assessment policies that will also entail, possibly, of our grading system and awards recognition,” DepEd Assistant Secretary Francis Cesar Bringas said in an interview with Teleradyo on July 12.

Bringas did not provide specific details of the possible changes.

“We will still be working for equal opportunities for recognition of personal achievements rather than instituting competition among learners,” he said.

The quarterly top 10 rankings were removed when the K-12 program began in 2016.

Students instead received an academic excellence award based on their average grade: with highest honors (98 to 100), with high honors (95-97) and with honors (90-94).
