‘Remember the importance of sacrifice and selflessness’

MANILA, Philippines — President Marcos reminded Filipinos of the importance of sacrifice and selflessness as he joined Muslims around the world in celebrating Eid’l Adha yesterday.

“Let us all be reminded of the importance of sacrifice and selflessness that mirror the essence of this occasion so that we can join hands with our Muslim brothers and sisters from all over the world in the spirit of peace, unity and mutual respect,” Marcos said in his message.

Eid’l Adha or the Feast of Sacrifice is the largest and the second of two major holidays in Islam.

The feast honors the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God’s command.

“It is only when we openly and willingly embrace each other’s differences that we will be able to build a more prosperous and harmonious society for all,” Marcos said.

“Truly, our nation is a land of plentiful creeds that is further nurtured by Muslim Filipinos who help weave our rich tapestry of diversity. Let their devotion to these beliefs shine above all throughout the festivities and further strengthen the bond among our families, friends and communities,” he added.

Marcos declared June 28 a regular nationwide holiday in observance of Eid’l Adha, to allow Filipinos to join the celebration.

For her part, Vice President Sara Duterte said the holiday highlights people’s willingness to make significant sacrifices for their families, communities and nations.

“It reminds us of our shared capacity for selflessness, faith and divine love for the greater good of our society,” Duterte said.

“In the spirit of Eid’l Adha, may the lessons of faith and sacrifice guide us all as we endeavor to create an inclusive future for young Filipinos. Let us forge a nation built on understanding, peace and shared prosperity,” she added.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and the Philippine embassy in Riyadh greeted Muslims all over the world in celebrating the holiday.

“We join everyone in celebrating the blessed occasion of Eid’l Adha. May the blessed Feast of Sacrifice bring everyone good health, peace, happiness and prosperity,” the embassy said in a statement said.

Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro urged Christians and Muslims to unite in the spirit of selflessness and generosity.

“This sacred occasion offers us a valuable opportunity to reflect, share our blessings and foster camaraderie among all Filipinos,” Teodoro said in a message.

He thanked Muslim workers in his department for their dedication and commitment to promote, preserve and nurture peace in the country.

Armed Forces chief Gen. Andres Centino offered a salute of gratitude to Filipino Muslims who are serving in the military.

“We express our gratitude to our heroes, especially our Muslim brothers and sisters in the Armed Forces, who continue to manifest the true sacrifice in seeking for peace and justice in our land,” he said.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) assured Muslims and the general public of their safety and security during the commemoration Eid’l Adha.

PNP chief Gen. Benjamin Acorda Jr. said police officers were ready to address any concerns or issues that may arise during the feast.

He urged the Muslims to foster an environment of understanding, respect, compassion, generosity and uphold the values of love that Eid’l Adha represents.

Presidential peace adviser Carlito Galvez Jr. urged Muslims and Christians to show “unity, kindness and compassion and help those who are most in need.”
