MANILA, Philippines — Three in every five or 62 percent of families in the Philippines own the house and lot they occupied last year, according to the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
This is based on the results of the 2022 Annual Poverty Indicators Survey (APIS), which is conducted by the PSA to provide information on the country’s poverty situation.
The PSA said about 15.3 percent of families occupied a house they owned in rent-free lot with owner’s consent, while 9.5 percent rented a house or room including a lot, and 8.3 percent occupied a rent-free house and lot with the owner’s consent.
It also said 2.5 percent owned a house in rent-free lot without the owner’s consent, 1.9 percent owned a house in a rented lot and 0.3 percent occupied a rent-free house and lot without the owner’s consent.
“A higher percentage of rural residents (65.8 percent) owned the house and lot they occupied compared with urban residents (58.7 percent),” the PSA said.
Meanwhile, a higher percentage of urban residents at 16 percent were renting the house and lot they reside in compared with rural residents under the same arrangement at 2.5 percent.
Regions with the highest percentage of families that own a house and lot are Cagayan Valley with 86.5 percent, the Cordilleras with 79.8 percent and Central Luzon with 76.6 percent.
The highest percentage of families renting the house and lot they occupy are in the National Capital Region with 28.6 percent and Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) with 15.7 percent.
Most or 90.3 percent of families in the country lived in a single type of building or housing unit last year.
Meanwhile, six percent reside in an apartment or row houses, 2.1 percent in duplex houses, 0.9 percent in other multi-unit residential buildings, 0.5 percent in condominiums or condotels and 0.2 percent in commercial or industrial or agricultural buildings or houses.
As for household conveniences, the PSA said smartphone was the most common household convenience or device present in Filipino homes at 85.3 percent.
This was followed by television sets (75.1 percent), refrigerator or freezer (50 percent), washing machine (49.2 percent) and motorcycle or tricycle (47.8 percent).
The 2022 APIS also showed one in every four families or 25.5 percent had a subscription to cable services in the January to June period of last year.
It also showed that 25.6 percent had a subscription to broadband internet, fiber internet or DSL, while 9.2 percent subscribed to video streaming services such as Netflix, iflix, Hooq, iWant or Viu.
