MANILA, Philippines — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR)’s offshore civilian patrol vessel will embark on a journey today to Pag-asa Island to provide assistance to fisherfolk amid the tension at the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

BFAR yesterday said the voyage will coincide with the celebration of the 125th year of Philippine Independence.

According to BFAR, BRP Francisco Dagohoy will depart Oyster Bay Naval Base in Barangay Macarascas, Puerto Princesa for the mission.

It will bring fishing gear and post-harvest equipment to the beneficiaries in Pag-asa Island.

“The fishing equipment will be turned over to the fishing community in Pag-asa Island on Thursday,” BFAR said.

BFAR national director and lawyer Demosthenes Escoto will lead the trip to Pag-asa Island.

“The activity aims to support the fisheries activities of the fisherfolk operating and situated within the West Philippine Sea, especially those in Pag-asa Island, help Filipino fisherfolk maximize their catch in the West Philippine Sea and ensure sustainable fisheries and aquatic resources by empowering fisherfolk,” BFAR added.

At least two fisherfolk associations in Pag-asa Island are expected to benefit from the capacity building and livelihood training.
