Taal records 4 volcanic earthquakes
MANILA, Philippines — Taal Volcano in Batangas continued its restiveness with at least four volcanic earthquakes recorded and 6,304 tons of sulfur dioxide emitted per day, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
State volcanologists on Sunday said that plumes at least 900 meters high were recorded at the volcano, drifting northeast.
“There was also a pronounced upswelling of hot volcanic fluids in the main crater lake,” Phivolcs said.
According to the state weather bureau, there was also an inflation of western Taal and long-term deflation of the Taal caldera.
Phivolcs warned of possible steam-driven or phreatic or gas-driven explosions.
It said that Alert Level 1 remains in effect, as entry into the Taal Volcano Island especially the main crater and Daang Kastila fissures, activities at Taal Lake and flying any aircraft close to the volcano are not allowed.
Meanwhile, at least three volcanic earthquakes and 1,089 tonnes per day of sulfur dioxide were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island as Alert Level 1 remained in effect.
